Summary

This study tested a program called Social Engage (S-ENGAGE) designed to help Spanish-speaking Latino adults who feel socially isolated and have suicidal thoughts. The program uses action planning to help participants set goals and take steps to increase their cultural-social activities. Researchers enrolled 54 adults and measured changes in social engagement and suicide risk. The goal is to develop a practical suicide prevention program for this community.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
behavioral intervention (Social Engage program)
What this could lead to
If successful, this program could offer a practical way to reduce suicide risk in Spanish-speaking Latino adults by increasing cultural-social connections.
What could go wrong
This was a small pilot study with only 54 participants, so results may not apply to all Latino adults. The intervention is behavioral and may not work for everyone.
