Spinal fluid test may spot brain damage early after hemorrhage
NCT ID NCT04998370
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at 366 people who had a brain bleed from a burst aneurysm. Researchers measured hemoglobin in the fluid around the brain and spine to see if it could predict secondary brain injury, like artery spasms or lack of blood flow. The goal is to find a better way to monitor patients and catch complications early.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simple test to catch brain complications early after a brain bleed.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures a marker, so it won't directly improve outcomes. Results may not change current care.

Who is studied
The study population consists of patients admitted to an academic tertiary care center due to an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The primary objective of the study focuses on patients included with EVD, while secondary objectives consider patients with both, EVD and LD as well as patients without any drainage system.
