Chill out tooth pain: cold therapy after root canal shows promise

NCT ID NCT07138365

First seen Feb 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tested two types of cold therapy (cryotherapy) to see if they could reduce pain and inflammation after root canal treatment for infected lower premolars. Thirty adults with painful tooth infections were randomly assigned to receive either an ice pack on the cheek, a cold saline rinse inside the tooth, or standard care. The researchers measured pain levels and a chemical linked to inflammation (substance P) to compare the approaches.
