Eye surgery and blood thinners: new study questions need to stop meds

NCT ID NCT03863548

First seen Feb 04, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looked at 748 adults having retina or vitreous eye surgery to see if taking blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs) increases the risk of dangerous bleeding during or after the operation. Doctors did not change their usual practice; they simply observed what happened. The goal was to find out whether it is safe to continue these medications instead of stopping them before surgery.
