First seen Jan 22, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study partners with 26 AME churches in South Carolina to test a 32-week walking program called Walk Your Heart to Health. About 300 adults aged 50 and older will join in-person walking groups led by church committees. Researchers will measure changes in daily steps and group cohesion, and identify what helps or hinders putting the program into practice.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Walk Your Heart to Health (32-week walking program delivered by church committees)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a proven, scalable way for churches to help older adults become more active and reduce chronic disease risk.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage implementation study, not a clinical trial of a drug. Results depend on church participation and may not apply to other settings. The program may not produce lasting changes in physical activity.
