Which anesthetic shields the brain better during carotid surgery? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07602400

First seen May 24, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026

Summary

This study looks at two common anesthetics used during carotid artery surgery to see which one better protects the brain from small strokes or memory problems. About 160 adults having planned carotid surgery will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two drugs. Before and after surgery, they will get brain scans and thinking tests, and blood samples will be checked for signs of brain injury. The goal is to find out if one anesthetic is safer for the brain.
