New scan spots hidden danger in neck arteries before stroke strikes

NCT ID NCT07004673

First seen Mar 06, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a special PET/MR scan can better identify risky plaque buildup in the carotid arteries (the main arteries in the neck) that could lead to a stroke. About 100 adults with known carotid plaque will get two types of PET tracers along with an MRI to measure inflammation and scarring inside the plaque. Researchers will then track who has a stroke over the next year to see if the scan can predict danger better than standard methods.
