Quick ER test aims to cut unnecessary antibiotics in kids

NCT ID NCT07453914

First seen Mar 12, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study, called Care4Kids, tests whether a rapid molecular test (SPOTFIRE) can improve care for children aged 2 months to 18 years who come to the emergency department with respiratory infections or flu-like symptoms. About 720 children will be randomly assigned to either get the rapid test or standard care. Researchers will track outcomes like antibiotic use, hospital stays, and recovery at a 14-day follow-up to see if faster diagnosis leads to better treatment and fewer unnecessary medications.
