Heart surgery patients: a simple drink before the knife may ease recovery
NCT ID NCT07212153
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 26, 2026 · Updated 32 times
Summary
This study looked at whether drinking a carbohydrate-rich beverage two hours before heart surgery could reduce insulin resistance—a condition where the body struggles to manage blood sugar, which can slow recovery. Fifty adults undergoing heart surgery with a bypass machine were randomly assigned to drink either a carbohydrate drink or plain water before their operation. Researchers measured insulin and glucose levels before and after surgery to see if the carbohydrate drink helped the body respond better to insulin.
