Radioactive tracer homes in on a protein tumors use to survive low oxygen
NCT ID NCT07833085
First seen Sep 22, 2026 · Last updated Sep 22, 2026
Summary
Researchers are testing a PET/CT scan that uses a radioactive tracer called 68Ga-CAIX to detect solid tumors. The tracer binds to CAIX, a protein that many solid tumors produce when oxygen is scarce. The study enrolls about 100 adults with suspected or confirmed solid tumors, including kidney, lung, and breast cancers. Participants receive the tracer by vein and then undergo a scan 30 to 60 minutes later. The team compares scan results with tumor tissue to see whether the imaging can find primary and metastatic lesions and whether tracer uptake reflects CAIX levels in the tumor.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- 68Ga-CAIX, a radioactive tracer that binds to the protein CAIX on tumor cells
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this scan could give doctors another way to find primary and metastatic solid tumors and to gauge how much CAIX a tumor carries.
- What could go wrong
- The tracer is experimental, so its images may miss some tumors or light up non-cancerous tissue. Results from 100 people may not apply to everyone, and the scan cannot replace a tissue biopsy.
