NCT ID NCT05873413

First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests two versions of a Zoom-based motivational program designed to help young adults (ages 18-25) who drink heavily become more willing and able to intervene when they see a sexual risk situation. One version focuses only on bystander skills; the other also addresses alcohol use. 450 participants will be tracked for 9 months using daily diaries and a virtual reality party simulation to see if the programs actually change behavior.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Motivational interviewing prevention program

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable program to reduce sexual violence by teaching bystanders how to step in safely, even when alcohol is involved.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage trial focused on self-reported behaviors and a virtual reality simulation, not real-world outcomes. The results may not translate to actual violence reduction.
