Could less surgery be just as good? new breast cancer trial aims to spare thousands from arm problems

NCT ID NCT06869629

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study looks at women with breast cancer that has spread to lymph nodes under the arm, found before surgery. Normally, doctors remove many lymph nodes, which can cause arm swelling and pain. The trial tests if removing only the first few lymph nodes (sentinel nodes) plus the known cancerous ones is just as effective for survival, while causing fewer side effects. About 1,380 participants will be followed to compare outcomes.
