Summary
This study compared two non-invasive techniques—near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD)—to monitor how well the brain controls its own blood flow during major non-cardiac surgery. Researchers studied 509 adults undergoing elective surgery with significant blood loss to see which method is more reliable and how blood flow changes relate to confusion or memory problems after surgery. The goal is to improve monitoring and reduce post-surgery brain complications.
