Brain scans reveal clues about consciousness in coma patients

NCT ID NCT01620957

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study looked at brain activity in 43 people in a coma after severe brain injury. Researchers used MRI scans to see how different brain regions communicate, especially the default-mode network (DMN), which is active when we are awake and daydreaming. The goal was to see if changes in this network relate to a person's level of consciousness and their chance of recovery. No new treatments were tested; this was an observational study to better understand the brain during coma.
