The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

This study investigates whether specific proteins found in tiny particles in the blood (called small extracellular vesicles) can help identify obese individuals who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers will measure levels of two proteins, integrin-β2 and ECM1, in blood samples from 120 adults aged 40–59 who are either normal weight, overweight, or have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. The goal is to see if these proteins can serve as early warning signs, allowing for earlier intervention to prevent or delay diabetes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that identifies obese individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes before the disease develops.
What could go wrong
This is an early, small study measuring protein levels, not a proven screening tool. The findings may not translate into a reliable test for broader populations.

Who is studied

The study population will consist of Hong Kong residents aged 40 to 59 years recruited from the Hong Kong Baptist University Mr. \& Mrs. Chan Hon Yin Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic and Good Clinical Practice Centre, as well as through recruitment posters and social media announcements. Participants will be classified into four groups according to BMI and glycemic status: non-overweight/non-obese participants without prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, overweight/obese participants without prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, non-overweight/non-obese participants with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, and overweight/obese participants with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Approximately 30 participants will be enrolled in each group.
