Can we stop early artery aging in kids with kidney disease?
NCT ID NCT07768865
First seen Aug 17, 2026 · Last updated Aug 18, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study investigates why arteries stiffen and harden faster in children and young people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and high blood pressure. Researchers will use non-invasive tests to compare arterial stiffness between those with CKD and matched controls, including healthy peers and those with high blood pressure alone. The goal is to understand whether the stiffness is due only to high blood pressure or also to other factors like nerve activity and metabolic changes. This could help find ways to prevent or treat arterial stiffness and protect future heart and kidney health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could identify ways to prevent or treat arterial stiffness in young people with kidney disease, potentially protecting their heart and kidney health in later life.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, so it won't directly test a treatment. The findings may not lead to immediate clinical changes, and the results depend on the specific group of participants studied.

Inclusion criteria: For CKD participants: * Aged 10-25 years at study entry. * Diagnosis of CKD confirmed on at least two GFR assessments 3-months apart; eGFR will be estimated using routine bedside formulae (modified Schwartz). Participants may include those on dialysis or those with a functioning kidney transplant. * Able to tolerate study investigations including 24-hour ABPM, echocardiogram, vascular assessments and MRI. For controls: * Aged 10-25 years at study entry * Having completed study measurements as part of other research being completed by the research group and having consented to their anonymised data being used in future research within the same research theme. Exclusion criteria (for all participants): * Heart abnormalities or pre-existing cardiac disease including congenital heart disease, previous cardiac surgery or heart failure. * Cardiac dysrhythmia. * Inability to tolerate the required study investigations (out of office BP monitoring, applanation tonometry, cardiac MRI).
