Doctors probe why lying face down helps failing lungs

NCT ID NCT02416037

Summary

This study aimed to better understand how to set ventilator pressure for patients with severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Researchers measured pressure inside the chest in 32 patients while they were lying on their back and then on their stomach (prone position), which is known to help survival. The goal was to gather data to help doctors personalize ventilator settings for each patient's lungs.
