Kidney transplant patients may benefit from common diabetes drugs
NCT ID NCT05013112
First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study tested whether two diabetes medications, metformin and empagliflozin, can safely improve metabolic problems (like fat distribution and blood sugar) in people who received a kidney transplant. 105 adult kidney transplant recipients with good kidney function were randomly assigned to one of three groups: metformin, empagliflozin, or standard care. The main goal was to see if these drugs could reduce the ratio of visceral to subcutaneous fat, a marker of metabolic risk, over 12 months.
