New algorithm could take guesswork out of heart valve surgery
NCT ID NCT03292497
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using a specific set of measurements (an algorithm) to decide between repairing or replacing a leaky mitral valve leads to better outcomes than letting the surgeon choose. About 110 patients with severe ischemic mitral regurgitation will be randomly assigned to either the algorithm-guided approach or standard surgeon preference. Researchers will compare changes in heart size and function over 12 months after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Treatment algorithm for mitral valve surgery
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a clear, evidence-based way to choose between valve repair or replacement, potentially improving heart function and reducing complications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage study (110 patients) comparing two surgical approaches. The algorithm may not prove superior to surgeon preference, and results may not apply to all patients.
