Blood test may reveal hidden surgery risks for drinkers

NCT ID NCT06864819

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a blood test called phosphatidylethanol (PEth), which shows how much alcohol someone has had over the past few weeks, can predict problems after surgery. Researchers will test 170 adults who drink alcohol and are having surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. They want to see if higher PEth levels are linked to issues like confusion, lung or heart problems, infections, or longer hospital stays.
