AI takes on mammograms: 100,000 women test smarter screening
NCT ID NCT04838756
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This large study tested whether artificial intelligence (AI) can make mammography screening better. Over 100,000 women were randomly assigned to have their mammograms read with AI assistance or by the usual two radiologists. The goal was to see if AI could catch more cancers, reduce false alarms, and lighten radiologists' workload. Results will show if AI can safely replace one of the two human readers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- AI software (Transpara) for mammography reading
- What this could lead to
- If successful, AI could make breast cancer screening more accurate and efficient, catching more cancers while reducing unnecessary callbacks.
- What could go wrong
- The AI may not perform as well in real-world settings or could miss cancers that human readers would catch. Results are from a single region and may not apply everywhere.
