New hope for frail seniors with AFib: device may replace blood thinners after ablation

NCT ID NCT07441382

First seen Mar 07, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests whether a procedure that closes off a small heart pouch (left atrial appendage occlusion) combined with a heart-rhythm correction (catheter ablation) is safer and more effective than ablation plus daily blood thinners for frail patients aged 75 and older with atrial fibrillation. The goal is to prevent strokes while reducing the risk of dangerous bleeding. Two hundred participants will be followed for up to two years to compare outcomes like stroke, major bleeding, and quality of life.
