New hope to shield kids from deadly transplant side effect

NCT ID NCT01743131

Summary

This study tested if adding a drug called abatacept to the standard medication regimen could better prevent a dangerous immune reaction called Acute Graft versus Host Disease (aGvHD) in patients receiving a bone marrow transplant for blood cancers. The trial involved 186 children and adults who received transplants from unrelated donors. Researchers compared the standard drugs plus a placebo to the standard drugs plus abatacept to see which group had fewer cases of severe aGvHD within the first 100 days after transplant.
