Poorly differentiated thyroid gland carcinoma
MONDO:0006382An adenocarcinoma arising from the thyroid gland showing only limited evidence of follicular cell differentiation. Microscopically, the adenocarcinoma cells are arranged in insular, solid, and trabecular patterns. There is associated necrosis, and vascular invasion. The prognosis depends on the tumor stage, complete or partial surgical removal of the tumor, and the degree of response to radioactive iodine therapy (adapted from WHO Tumors of Endocrine Organs, IARC Press, Lyon 2004)
Also known as: insular carcinoma, poorly differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid gland, poorly differentiated carcinoma of thyroid gland, poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma, poorly differentiated thyroid gland cancer, poorly differentiated thyroid gland carcinoma, thyroid gland poorly differentiated carcinoma, poorly differentiated thyroid cancer

New drug zanzalintinib aims to shrink thyroid tumors before surgery
Disease control Recruiting nowThis phase 2 trial tests the drug zanzalintinib given before surgery in 45 people with advanced thyroid cancer. The goal is to see if the drug can shrink tumors, making surgery more effective. Researchers will also monitor safety and side effects.

Can less radiation be just as effective for tough thyroid cancers?
Disease control Recruiting nowThis phase 2 trial compares two radiation strategies for people with poorly differentiated or anaplastic thyroid cancer—rare and aggressive forms. One approach treats only the high-risk areas (selective coverage), while the other treats a larger region (comprehensive coverage). T…

New hope for Hard-to-Treat thyroid cancer: drug XL092 enters human trials
Disease control Recruiting nowThis phase 2 trial tests a drug called XL092 in 33 people with advanced thyroid cancer that has stopped responding to radioiodine therapy. XL092 works by blocking a protein that helps cancer cells grow. The study aims to see if the drug can slow or stop cancer progression.

Immune-Boosting drug could help fight High-Risk thyroid cancer before surgery
Disease control Recruiting nowThis phase 2 trial is testing whether giving the drug pembrolizumab before thyroid surgery can help the immune system attack high-risk differentiated thyroid cancer. About 25 adults with a high chance of cancer returning will receive two doses of pembrolizumab before their thyroi…

New PET scan could improve detection of metastatic thyroid cancer
Diagnosis Recruiting nowThis study compares a newer type of scan (I-124 PET/CT) to the standard scan (I-123 whole body imaging) for finding thyroid cancer that has spread. About 62 people with thyroid cancer will get both scans, and researchers will see if the new scan is more accurate. The goal is to i…
