Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome
MONDO:0015265A lung disorder that is mainly associated with chronic allograft dysfunction after lung transplantation and that is characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of bronchiolar walls that reduce the diameter of the bronchioles and result in progressive and irreversible airflow obstruction.
Also known as: BOOP, constrictive bronchiolitis, organised pneumonia, organized pneumonia, bronchiolitis obliterans with obstructive pulmonary disease, BO, bronchiolitis exudativa, bronchiolitis obliterans

Inhaled cyclosporine aims to halt lung transplant rejection
Disease control CompletedThis Phase 3 trial tested whether adding inhaled liposomal cyclosporine A to standard care can improve lung function in 169 double lung transplant patients with chronic rejection. Participants inhaled the drug twice daily for 48 weeks. The main goal was to see if it slowed the de…

Nanoparticle inhaler could tame lung transplant rejection
Disease control CompletedThis study tested a new way to deliver the drug everolimus directly to the lungs using tiny particles called liposomes. The goal was to treat chronic lung rejection (bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome) after a lung transplant. Researchers used human lung tissue and cells in the la…

Inhaled cyclosporine shows promise for lung transplant rejection
Disease control CompletedThis Phase 3 trial tested whether adding inhaled liposomal cyclosporine A to standard care helps single lung transplant patients with chronic lung rejection. 62 adults who had a single lung transplant at least a year earlier and had signs of chronic rejection took part. The study…

New drug could slow lung decline in transplant patients
Disease control CompletedThis phase 3 trial tests whether nintedanib, a drug already used for lung scarring, can slow the decline in lung function in lung transplant recipients who develop bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a form of chronic rejection. 58 participants received either nintedanib or …

Can lung MRI replace CT scans for detecting a serious Post-Transplant lung condition?
Diagnosis CompletedThis study looked at whether lung MRI can diagnose bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) after allogeneic stem cell transplant as well as chest CT scans. BOS is a serious lung complication that can occur after transplant, and early diagnosis is important. Researchers compared M…

New MRI breath test could spot lung transplant rejection earlier
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study tested a new MRI technique using inhaled hyperpolarized xenon gas to detect early signs of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a common form of chronic rejection after lung transplant. Only 3 participants were involved, and the goal was to see if the imaging could…

Can medical records reveal how fast lung function fades after transplant?
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study reviews the medical records of about 284 adults who developed chronic lung allograft dysfunction with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (CLAD-BOS) after a lung transplant. Researchers will track how lung function, measured by FEV1, changes each year after diagnosis. Th…

Helium-3 MRI reveals hidden airflow secrets in lungs
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study uses a special MRI technique with inhaled helium-3 gas to measure how fast air moves through the windpipe and lungs. Researchers will compare airflow in healthy volunteers and people with COPD or constrictive bronchitis. The goal is to gather real-world data to improve…

Lung transplant infection study aims to improve Long-Term survival
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study followed 600 lung transplant recipients at the University of Pittsburgh to see how common viral and bacterial infections are and how they affect long-term health. Researchers focused on whether a specific infection (C. pneumoniae) is linked to a condition called bronch…
