Can stem cells help infants with biliary atresia avoid a liver transplant?
Disease control Recruiting nowThis trial tests whether injecting umbilical cord stem cells directly into the liver during Kasai surgery can improve outcomes for infants with biliary atresia, a condition where bile ducts are blocked and the liver becomes damaged. Forty infants aged 30 to 90 days will receive e…

Could feeding kids sooner after liver surgery speed recovery?
Disease control Recruiting nowThis study compares two feeding approaches after surgery for biliary atresia or choledochal cyst in children. One group starts oral liquids within 24 hours after surgery, while the other follows conventional care and waits over 48 hours for bowel activity to return. Researchers t…

Could daily antibiotics shield babies from Post-Surgery infections?
Disease control Recruiting nowThis study tests whether giving oral antibiotics after Kasai surgery can prevent cholangitis, a serious bile duct infection, in infants with biliary atresia. About 356 babies will be randomly assigned to receive either preventive antibiotics or standard care, and they will be fol…

Special formula may help malnourished infants with bile duct disease
Disease control Recruiting nowThis study tests whether a high-MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) formula given before and after Kasai surgery can improve growth and nutrition in infants with biliary atresia. Biliary atresia is a rare liver condition that blocks bile flow, leading to malnutrition. The trial will …

Diaper photos may spot hidden liver disease in babies
Diagnosis Recruiting nowThis study explores whether a computer program can learn to spot signs of cholestasis—a liver condition where bile flow is blocked—by analyzing photos of dirty diapers taken by parents. Researchers will collect images from thousands of infants, both healthy and those with suspect…

Glowing poop test could spot rare infant liver disease
Diagnosis Recruiting nowThis study tests whether a fluorescent dye called indocyanine green (ICG) can help diagnose biliary atresia, a rare liver disease in infants where bile ducts are blocked. After injection, the dye is normally removed through bile and appears in stool. In infants with biliary atres…

Diaper dye could spot deadly infant liver disease
Diagnosis Recruiting nowThis study tests a simple method to diagnose biliary atresia, a serious liver condition in newborns. Infants with suspected cholestasis receive a dye called indocyanine green (ICG) through an IV. Doctors then check the baby's diaper for the dye, which would indicate bile is flowi…

Scientists hunt for genetic clues to biliary atresia, top cause of liver transplants in kids
Knowledge-focused Recruiting nowThis study aims to uncover the genetic and developmental causes of biliary atresia, a rare condition that leads to liver failure in newborns and accounts for half of all childhood liver transplants worldwide. Researchers will analyze DNA from 1,100 children who have had or need a…

What drives a rare liver disease in newborns? a genetic deep dive aims to find out
Knowledge-focused Recruiting nowBiliary atresia is a rare but serious liver condition in newborns that often leads to transplantation. This study collects blood, skin, and liver tissue samples from affected children to search for the genes and cellular pathways that cause the disease. By understanding the molec…
