Anaplastic astrocytoma
MONDO:0016684Anaplastic astrocytoma is a rare, high-grade, malignant glial tumor, histologically characterized by abundance of pleomorphic astrocytes and multiple mitotic figures, often associated with diffuse infiltration of the surrounding tissue, considerable edema and mass effect and involvement of the contralateral brain. Depending on the primary localization of the tumor, patients can present with signs of raised intracranial pressure (headache, vomiting, papilledema), seizures, progressive neurological deficits, and/or behavioral changes. The tumor is most commonly localized in the frontal and temporal lobes, brain stem and spinal cord.
Also known as: anaplastic astrocytoma, astrocytoma, anaplastic, malignant, grade III astrocytic neoplasm, grade III astrocytic tumor, grade III astrocytic tumour, grade III astrocytoma, malignant astrocytoma

Experimental brain tumor combo shows promise but trial halted early
Disease control Stopped earlyThis study tested a new drug called zotiraciclib (TG02) combined with the standard chemotherapy temozolomide in adults with recurrent anaplastic astrocytoma or glioblastoma. The goal was to find the safest dose and see if the combination worked better than temozolomide alone. The…

Experimental virus gets a second shot at brain tumors
Disease control Stopped earlyThis study tested the safety of giving a second dose of an experimental virus (C134) directly into the brain tumor of patients whose malignant glioma had returned. Only one patient was enrolled before the study was stopped. The goal was to see if repeat dosing was safe and tolera…

Spinal tap could replace brain surgery for young tumor patients
Knowledge-focused Stopped earlyThis study looked at whether a liquid biopsy—testing the fluid around the brain and spinal cord—can find tumor DNA in children and young adults with brain tumors. The goal was to see if this safer, non-surgical test could replace risky tissue biopsies for diagnosis and monitoring…

Brain tumor study looks at tiny molecule as possible clue
Knowledge-focused Stopped earlyThis study looked at a tiny molecule called microRNA-10b in people with brain tumors called gliomas. Researchers wanted to see if higher levels of this molecule could help predict how the disease might progress or how long patients might live. The study was stopped early, but it …
