New acid blocker could shield heart patients from stomach bleeding
NCT ID NCT07467213
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares a new drug, Zastaprazan, against standard proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for preventing stomach bleeding in 5,000 adults who had a heart attack and are on blood thinners. The goal is to see if routine use of Zastaprazan reduces serious complications like death, another heart attack, stroke, or bleeding. Participants will take either Zastaprazan or a PPI daily for stomach protection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Zastaprazan (a potassium competitive acid blocker)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a more effective way to prevent stomach bleeding in heart attack patients taking blood thinners, potentially reducing hospital stays and complications.
What could go wrong
This is a large Phase 3 trial, but it's still early to know if Zastaprazan is truly better than standard PPIs. There may be unknown side effects, and results may not apply to all patients.
