Smartwatch study aims to spot opioid use and withdrawal
NCT ID NCT07405398
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a smartwatch can detect when someone uses opioids or experiences withdrawal. Researchers will collect biometric data from 420 people with opioid use disorder who wear the watch for 14 days. The goal is to train a machine learning algorithm to recognize these events, which could eventually help monitor treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Samsung Galaxy Watch wearable device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a wearable device that helps detect opioid use and withdrawal, potentially improving treatment monitoring.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study focused on training an algorithm, not testing a treatment. The device may not be accurate enough for real-world use, and results may not apply to all patients.
