Women Runners' hearts under the microscope in Ultra-Marathon study
NCT ID NCT07372859
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study will follow 120 female runners during ultra-endurance races (69-80 km) to see how their hearts and inflammation levels change. Researchers will use ultrasound scans before, during, and after the race, and link those changes to hormone levels like estrogen and testosterone. The goal is to better understand women's unique heart responses to extreme exercise.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve understanding of how extreme exercise affects women's hearts and inflammation, guiding future training and health advice.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with no treatment, so it won't directly change medical practice. Results may not apply to all women or less extreme exercise.
