Can a steroid and a gel make wisdom tooth recovery less painful?

NCT ID NCT07317596

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving methylprednisolone (a steroid) before surgery and placing hyaluronic acid (a natural gel) in the tooth socket after extraction can reduce pain, swelling, and jaw stiffness after wisdom tooth removal. Forty healthy adults having a wisdom tooth pulled will be randomly assigned to receive one or both treatments, or standard care. The goal is to find a better way to manage common post-surgery discomfort.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
methylprednisolone and hyaluronic acid
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple, safe way to reduce pain, swelling, and jaw stiffness after wisdom tooth removal, improving recovery for many people.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are already used in other contexts, so major breakthroughs are unlikely.
