Can a shot into the tumor help fight breast cancer?

NCT ID NCT07319195

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-phase trial tests two immune-boosting drugs—Mitazalimab and Nivolumab—injected directly into breast tumors before surgery. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and can activate the immune system to fight the cancer. About 32 adults with resectable breast cancer will receive one dose 7 or more days before their scheduled surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mitazalimab (CD40 agonist) and Nivolumab (PD-1 inhibitor)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new way to activate the immune system against breast cancer before surgery, potentially reducing recurrence risk.

What could go wrong

This is a very early (Phase 1) trial with only 32 participants, so safety and immune effects are still unknown. The treatment may not improve outcomes or could cause side effects.
