Immunotherapy may let some rectal cancer patients ditch surgery

NCT ID NCT04643041

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study looks at whether people with a certain type of rectal cancer (dMMR/MSI-H) can safely avoid surgery if their tumor disappears after immunotherapy. Standard treatments like surgery or chemo can cause lasting side effects, including loss of bowel control or needing a permanent colostomy. The study will follow 47 patients who had a complete response to a PD-1 inhibitor to see if a 'watch and wait' approach is safe and effective.
