Warm anesthetics may cool down epidural fevers in childbirth

NCT ID NCT06682416

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether warming the local anesthetic used in epidural pain relief to body temperature (37°C) can lower the chance of fever during labor. About 424 women from two hospitals will take part. Half will get the warmed solution, half will get room-temperature solution. Researchers will track fever rates, pain scores, and health outcomes for mothers and newborns.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

local anesthetic solution (warmed to 37°C)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to lower fever risk during epidural pain relief in childbirth.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study. The effect may be small or not apply to all women. Fever during labor has many causes, so warming the anesthetic may not help.
