Can High-Intensity walking bursts outperform moderate exercise for stroke recovery?
NCT ID NCT06268041
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether high-intensity interval training (short bursts of fast walking) is better than moderate-intensity walking for improving walking ability in people who had a stroke at least 6 months ago. 156 participants will be randomly assigned to one of two 12-week exercise programs, each done three times a week with a physical therapist. Researchers will measure walking distance and speed before, during, and after the program, and again three months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
walking exercise programs (moderate-intensity or high-intensity interval training)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that high-intensity interval training is more effective than moderate exercise for restoring walking function after a stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage behavioral trial. Results may not apply to all stroke survivors, and the high-intensity program may be too demanding for some participants.
