VR brain games before surgery may shield seniors from memory loss

NCT ID NCT07370844

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether doing virtual reality (VR) brain exercises for a few days before surgery can help older adults with cerebral small vessel disease avoid confusion or memory problems after their operation. Two hundred forty participants will either receive VR training or standard care. Researchers will measure thinking skills and brain scans before and after surgery to see if the VR group does better.

Virtual reality cognitive training device
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to protect thinking and memory in older adults after routine surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 240 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The VR training is short-term and may not produce lasting benefits.
