Can a VR headset help stroke survivors recover arm movement?

NCT ID NCT06864741

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests whether a low-cost virtual reality (VR) system can help people recovering from a first-time stroke improve their arm movement. Researchers will compare VR therapy to standard care in 40 adults with moderate to severe arm weakness. Participants will use a Meta Quest headset to play gamified exercises in the hospital and at home, and their progress will be tracked through motor function tests and feedback on ease of use and motion sickness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual reality guided motor rehabilitation using Meta Quest 2/3S/3 headset

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a low-cost, engaging way to improve arm recovery after stroke, especially for people in rural areas with limited rehab access.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 40 people, so results may not apply to everyone. VR may cause motion sickness or not be as effective as standard therapy.
