Virtual reality steps in to help lymphedema patients walk better

NCT ID NCT07472543

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding virtual reality (VR) exercises to standard therapy can improve walking, reduce leg swelling, and boost quality of life in people with lower limb lymphedema. Forty adults with stage 2 or 3 lymphedema after cancer surgery will either receive standard care or standard care plus VR-assisted walking training. The VR system provides visual and audio cues to guide steps, aiming to make rehab more engaging and effective.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
virtual reality-assisted gait training using the Rehawalk device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a more engaging and effective way to improve walking and reduce swelling in people with lower limb lymphedema.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply widely. The VR approach may not provide significant benefits over standard therapy alone.
