New MRI trick could spot breast cancer without extra gadgets

NCT ID NCT07608068

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new MRI technique called virtual MR elastography (vMRE) that uses standard scans to measure breast tissue stiffness, which can help tell benign from malignant lesions. Researchers will compare vMRE to the traditional MRE method in 238 women with suspicious breast findings. The goal is to see if vMRE can replace or supplement MRE, making diagnosis easier and more widely available.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual MR Elastography (vMRE) via diffusion-weighted MRI

What this could lead to

If successful, vMRE could provide a simpler, more accessible way to diagnose breast cancer using standard MRI, reducing the need for specialized scans.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The new technique may not be as accurate as standard MRE, and results may not apply to all patients or settings.
