Vitamin d secrets in pregnancy: new study tracks how women use it

NCT ID NCT02705287

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is tracking how pregnant and non-pregnant women absorb and use vitamin D, especially in relation to obesity and genetic background. Researchers will give 160 women a tiny, safe dose of labeled vitamin D and take blood samples over 40 days. The goal is to learn how pregnancy changes vitamin D dynamics, not to test a treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

deuterated vitamin D3 (tracer dose)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better understand how pregnancy, weight, and genetics affect vitamin D needs, leading to improved nutrition guidelines.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with a small dose of labeled vitamin D, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve health or cure any condition.
