Virtual reality goggles could replace some sedation during gut procedures

NCT ID NCT06766162

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset during endoscopic procedures (EMR and ESD) can help reduce pain and anxiety. Forty adults were split into two groups: one received standard sedation, and the other used VR alongside standard care. The goal was to see if VR could lower the need for sedative drugs and improve the patient experience.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Virtual reality headset

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to manage pain and anxiety during endoscopic procedures, potentially reducing side effects from sedation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed feasibility study with only 40 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and VR might not work for all patients or procedure types.
