First seen Apr 14, 2026 · Last updated May 07, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study tested whether using virtual reality (VR) can reduce anxiety and pain in patients recovering from heart surgery, specifically during the removal of chest drainage tubes. 200 adults who had just had heart surgery were randomly assigned to use VR or breathe nitrous oxide (laughing gas) during the procedure. The goal was to see if VR could be a better, drug-free option for managing discomfort.
