New study tests which scope helps tiny hearts most

NCT ID NCT05902013

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether using a video laryngoscope (a camera-equipped scope) helps doctors place a breathing tube through the nose more successfully on the first try compared to a standard direct laryngoscope in infants under 1 year with congenital heart disease. About 180 infants will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods during their heart surgery. The goal is to see which technique leads to fewer complications and better outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

laryngoscopy (video or direct)

What this could lead to

If video laryngoscopy proves better, it could improve first-attempt intubation success in these fragile infants, reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study, so results may not be definitive. The devices are already in use, so no major breakthrough is expected.
