Blood pressure pill shows promise for preserving insulin in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes

Summary
This study tested whether verapamil, a drug usually used for high blood pressure, could help preserve the body's ability to make insulin in people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. 136 adults took either verapamil or a placebo daily for 12 months. The main goal was to measure changes in C-peptide levels, a marker of insulin production, after a mixed meal. The study is complete, and results will show if verapamil can slow the loss of beta-cell function.
