Could a common blood pressure drug help kids with type 1 diabetes keep making insulin?
NCT ID NCT07199946
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether verapamil, a drug used for high blood pressure, can help children aged 4 to 9 with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes keep making some insulin. The trial has two parts: first, 6 children will take verapamil to check safety; then, 30 more children will be randomly assigned to get verapamil or a placebo for 12 months. Researchers will measure insulin production and blood sugar control over 24 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Verapamil (a blood pressure drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could help children with type 1 diabetes keep making some of their own insulin, reducing the amount of insulin they need to inject.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase I/II trial with only 36 children, so results are preliminary. Verapamil may not work as well in children as it did in adults, and there are risks like low blood pressure or heart issues.
