Botox-Like shot may simplify hernia repair, early trial hopes
NCT ID NCT07226791
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether an injection of gemibotulinumtoxinA (a botulinum toxin similar to Botox) can help surgeons close the belly wall during open ventral hernia repair without needing a complex additional procedure. About 200 adults with a midline ventral hernia will receive either the drug or a placebo injection before surgery. Researchers will check how often the belly wall can be closed simply and track any side effects over about 25 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
gemibotulinumtoxinA (a botulinum toxin type A injection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could simplify ventral hernia repair by helping surgeons close the belly wall without needing a more complex procedure.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 200 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug is injected into muscles and could cause weakness or other side effects.
