Second chance: new combo targets relapsed CLL after venetoclax fails
NCT ID NCT04523428
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests a combination of two drugs, venetoclax and acalabrutinib, in 60 adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) whose cancer returned after initial treatment with venetoclax plus an antibody. Participants first take acalabrutinib alone for 2 cycles, then add venetoclax for 24 more cycles. The goal is to see if this approach can clear the cancer from the bone marrow, offering a new option for patients who relapse.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
venetoclax and acalabrutinib
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for CLL patients whose disease returns after initial venetoclax therapy, potentially achieving deep remission without needing another antibody drug.
What could go wrong
This is a small Phase 2 trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The combination may cause side effects like low blood counts or infections, and it is not yet known if it works better than other options.
