New blood test could reveal hidden COVID-19 infections
NCT ID NCT04418206
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a blood test called ELISpot to see if it can detect the body's immune response to the COVID-19 virus. The test aims to find infections that standard swab tests might miss and help predict whether a person will develop mild or severe illness. Researchers enrolled 950 people, including those with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, their close contacts, and healthy volunteers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this test could help doctors better understand when someone was infected and predict whether they might develop severe COVID-19.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The test may not prove accurate enough for widespread use, and results may not change patient care directly.
