New camera could slash skin cancer surgery time

NCT ID NCT07482956

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a special camera (LC-OCT) can help surgeons remove basal cell carcinoma more efficiently. About 290 adults with skin cancer will be randomly assigned to standard surgery or surgery guided by this imaging tool. The goal is to see if the camera reduces the number of surgical rounds needed to remove all cancer cells.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging technique could make skin cancer surgery faster and more precise, reducing the need for multiple surgeries and preserving more healthy tissue.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with 290 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The imaging tool may not always clearly show tumor edges, and it adds extra time before surgery.
