Can light therapy boost eczema treatment? new trial tests UVB plus creams

NCT ID NCT05704205

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding narrowband UVB phototherapy (a type of light treatment) to optimized topical therapy (creams, ointments, and skin care advice) helps adults with moderate atopic eczema more than topical therapy alone. About 316 adults whose eczema is not well controlled by standard creams will be randomly assigned to receive either UVB light three times a week for 8-16 weeks plus topical care, or topical care only. The main goal is to see how many achieve a 50% reduction in eczema severity after 3 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Narrowband UVB phototherapy (a type of light therapy) plus optimized topical therapy (creams, ointments, and lifestyle advice)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that adding UVB light therapy to standard creams helps more people with eczema get clearer skin than creams alone.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial, not yet proven in large populations. UVB therapy requires frequent clinic visits and may cause skin irritation or long-term skin damage. The benefit over topical therapy alone may be small.
